Singaporean Mandarin Database
This database contains a collection of Mandarin terms which have cultural, historical or sentimental value unique to Singapore. Some of these terms are more commonly read in print while others are often used in our everyday conversations.
Similar to “ticket”. The term is the transliteration of the English word “coupon”.
- Parking coupons are widely used in Singapore. They were introduced in the 1980s. Initially, drivers had to write down the date, time and place of parking on the parking coupon.
- Parking coupons subsequently evolved, and drivers were only required to tear off circular tabs on the coupons to indicate the dates and times of parking, then display them on the front of the windscreens for inspection.
