DADDY & MOMMY MANDARIN STORYTELLING COMPETITION 2008 Join us at Woodlands Regional Library on Saturday 21, June 2008 from 2pm to 4.30pm
Presented by Eduplus Language Centre and supported by Speak Mandarin Campaign and National Library Board, the Daddy & Mommy Mandarin Storytelling competition is a unique opportunity for the whole family to learn, play and perform on the stage together!
A parents-only affair in the beginning, this year’s competition promises to be even more entertaining than before as both parents and children are invited to take the stage in a joint effort to tell their stories. As in previous years, both professional judges and children present in the audience will judge participants during the event. The public is welcome to attend and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon for the whole family.
Ms Lim Sau Hoong, Chairman of the Promote Mandarin Council said, “I applaud the parents for taking up this challenge, to go on stage and put both their language and storytelling skills to test. Leading by example, the parents will not only influence their children to learn the language, they are also showing how enjoyable it can be. The family environment is very important for language learning, and I am glad that we have such an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy this fun and interactive activity together!”
The Daddy & Mommy Mandarin Storytelling competition has been very well received in previous years, and has been found to be a good way of encouraging Mandarin-learning among children, and also improving their Mandarin language proficiency.
Ms Chang Mei Hsiang, Principal of Eduplus Language Centre, observed, “From previous competitions, I have seen that the Daddy & Mummy Storytelling competition has impacted children’s attitudes towards learning Mandarin through family interaction. Children are more receptive and willing to learn, and there has also been a great improvement in their Mandarin language skills.”
This year, there are not only more fathers participating – the competition also attracted an expectant mother to get into the act. Regina Chua, who is 5 months into her term, says, “I don’t really see it as an extra challenge for me to take part in the competition. It’s just a fun and exciting activity that the whole family is looking forward to, I even got my brother to support by acting as a tree!” Regina Chua will be telling the story together with her husband, 2 kids and her brother.
